Kenneth Steel (RBA, SGA 1906-1970) - 3
Electricity Substation, Moore St, Sheffield - 3
Charcoal Pencil on Daler Watercolour board, c. 1964

This drawing was not produced by the architect, but is believed to have been commissioned from the artist by the CEGB and taken from plans before construction, probably for a prospectus or company report. The view is of the rear of the building from Hanover Way looking southeast; the roundabout at the junction of Ecclesall Road would be to the right of this picture.

The existence of this drawing is one of pure chance - it was found and rescued from rubbish destined for the skip during the demolition of a factory on Penistone Road about 11 years ago.

Kenneth Steel (RBA, SGA 1906-1970) Painter in watercolour, engraver & lithographer of landscapes & street scenes; poster designer. Born Sheffield 9/7/1906, son of G.T.Steel, an artist and silver engraver. Studied at Sheffield College of Art under Anthony Betts. Represented in several public collections. Achieved a prolific output of artwork for the railways. Based in Crookes, Sheffield for years. Produced posters for LNER & BR. Well-known to the travelling public as the artist of panoramic scenes that were shown framed beneath the luggage rack in the compartments on railway carriages.

This piece is shown here by kind permission of Mr Malcolm Camp.

  1. Update from APG Works

The Kenneth Steel edition will now consist of 2 prints. We have acquired an additional image from this set of renders which shows the building's more familiar face, fronting onto Moore Street and visible from the Ecclesall Road roundabout. This also shows the prominent external staircase. We will post more on this when the artwork for the edition has been created.
